Shadow Glen Riding Stables has been serving the Sacramento, Fair Oaks, and Orangevale area for over 35 years. Relocating from the hill on Hazel & Hwy 50 to its current location in 1985, it’s nicely nestled in a corner of Mississippi Bar on acreage that is leased from the California State Parks Department. As you pull in the drive way you can feel the “Old West” and you know you’re in for a great time. On the sidelines of some of the trails you will see Gold mining history. . . the tailings from the gold rush days and you can envision what life was like over 100 years ago.
The Mississippi Bar area has trails that take you down to the American River at Lake Natoma and out to Folsom Lake and Granite Bay. These trails connect to the Pioneer Express Trail, Western States Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail – you can ride for miles and miles and still have new sites to see. The Mississippi Bar area is significant both historically, with it's obvious connection to the mining industry, and ecologically - with vernal pools, lagoons, and rich wildlife – including coyotes, deer, jack rabbits, gray squirrels, wild turkeys and even mountain lions.
Shadow Glen offers a variety of activities including horse boarding, trail rides, private horseback riding lessons, a summer camp for kids. Please see the menu above and click on the services to learn more.
Those of you that own your own horses are welcome to park in the lower parking lot and enjoy approximately 10,000 acres of designated State park horse trails at no charge. If you are really daring, there are trails from here all the way to Squaw Valley.
Private Horseback Riding Lessons are a full hour one-on-one lesson. Summer horse camp is designed for children ages 7-16 with a maximum number of 10 students each week. In selecting a horse camp for your child, please keep in mind that our instructors are CPR and First aid certified, the riding portion of the camp is not all arena riding, but the students are given the opportunity to use their skills on real trails and enjoy the real western feeling. We caution individuals when selecting a horse camp or riding lessons for their children to please beware of the backyard horse camps and lessons that operate without required business licenses and that run off their homeowners insurance.
If you would like to go riding or take a few lessons, reservations are required and secured with a credit card with a 24 hour cancellation policy. We do require helmets for anyone under age 18.
